Bsc 3rd Year Physical Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24

Today we are providing b.sc 3rd year physical chemistry syllabus for the BSc final-year students.

This syllabus is important to know the details of the subject.

Every university issues new or amended syllabi for sessions.

Sometimes it will delay.

If any bsc 3rd year students want to know the chapter-wise syllabus.

This syllabus is perfect for them.

This is a common BSc 3rd year physical chemistry syllabus and the main focus is to provide the right direction as well as information to physical chemistry students.

This syllabus contains chapter-wise details for paper 1, paper 2, and paper 3.

This will help you to prepare the BSc physical chemistry notes for upcoming examinations.

Before following this syllabus, you should confirm that your university syllabus and this one match each other.

The basic tips are - Read this syllabus carefully.

Understand the concept, and what you have to study.

Prepare a chart for smooth preparation of notes in your own words.

This will help you to get good marks in examinations.

Let's Start.

B.sc 3rd Year Physical Chemistry Syllabus 2023-24

Group-A (States And Structure)

  • Gaseous State: Collision number, collision frequency, collision diameter and mean free path of molecules of a gas (including temperature and pressure dependence). The viscosity of gases, the relation between means free path and coefficient of viscosity, temperature and pressure dependence of viscosity (η). Calculation of δ from, η, degree of freedom of motion, the principle of equipartition of energy, its use for determination of Avogadro's number.
  • Solid State: Crystal forces, more about radius ratio rule and coordination number of ions, stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric defects in simple ionic solids. Elementary idea of X-ray diffraction techniques.
  • Spectroscopy: Basis principles of different types of absorption, idea or IR, UV-vis spectroscopy.
  • Photochemistry: Basic principles, Lambert-Beer Law, molar extinction coefficient, Stark Einstein Law of photochemical equivalence, Primary and secondary processes, examples of low and high quantum yield. Photochemical reactions such as H2 + Cl2→ HCI, H2 + Br2→HBr, and decomposition of HI. Phosphorescence and fluorescence. Elementary idea of electron spectroscopy and area of its applications.

Group B (Equilibrium)

  • Thermodynamics: Derivation of the law of mass action, molal elevation and molal depression constants, van't Hoff reaction, isochore and isotherms, Maxwell thermodynamic relations, Partial molar quantities, chemical potential, chemical potential with temperature and pressure. Chemical potential in an ideal gas mixture. Absolute entropy and the third law of thermodynamics.
  • Phase Equilibrium: Three-component systems. The idea of sorting out triangular coordinates, partially miscible liquids, and the role of added salts Cl──(NH4)2SO4─H2O. Phase diagram of cement.
  • Wave Mechanics: de-Broglie equation. Schrodinger equation and its application to H-atom (only interpretation of solution and not solving), Idea of operators, Uncertainty Principle.

Group-C (Changes)

  • Chemical Kinetics: Kinetics of third-order reactions, half-life period and its unit, the kinetics of complex reaction-side reactions, opposing reactions and consecutive reactions, chain reactions.
  • Electrochemistry: E.M.F. of concentration cells with and without transference, Liquid junction potential, application of E.M.F. measurements. Electrodes: Hydrogen electrode, calomel electrode, quinine-hydroquinone electrode, glass electrode, measurement of pH using hydrogen electrode.
  • Dynamic Electrochemistry: (a) Transport number and its determination by Hittort's and moving boundary methods Abnormal transport number. Determination of mean activity by E M.F. method. (b) Gouy-Chapman model of double layer, elementary idea of overpotential, power generation in fuel cells, thermodynamics of corrosion.
  • Surface Chemistry: Types of adsorption, adsorption isotherms, Freundlich, Langmuir and Gibbs adsorption isotherms: Limitations and applications.

We are recommending some books on this subject with the names of the authors.

These books are textbooks.

You can read to improve your knowledge of this subject.

That clears your concept and you understand the subject smoothly.

These books are very helpful in preparing notes too.
